National Trials Team

Members of the National Trials Team are selected either by an intra-school trial competition or an audition where they demonstrate their advocacy skills. The spirited competition for the limited number of spots on the prestigious team requires students to argue motions, respond to opposing counsel; cross examine witnesses, and deliver their opening or closing statements to current trial team members.

Teams are then selected to compete in national events from California to Puerto Rico. Team members and their alumni coaches devote an enormous amount of time preparing, practicing and ultimately competing in full trials against other law schools.
The preparation pays off. Trial Team members have posted an outstanding string of victories and honors in recent years.

Highlights include winning the Pacific McGeorge Seventh National Ethics Trial Competition in 2013, topping more than a dozen competing law school teams; overall victory in the 2012 Mock Trial (Gourley) Competition, sponsored by the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, PA; Best Direct Examination at the 2012 Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition; and advancement to the final round of the 2012 Puerto Rico Trial Advocacy Competition.

The Columbus School of Law’s continuing presence among the elite trial advocacy schools starts with dedication to achieving courtroom excellence.
“The enormous talent of those who compete makes me very hopeful for the future of our trial teams,” says Professor Louis Barracato, faculty advisor to the trial team. “I look forward to working with all of them and wish to thank the current members of the trial team for their continuing contributions of time and talent and their untiring dedication to hard work.”
